FAO and Ministry of Agriculture Launch Climate-Smart Farmer Field Schools in Karak, with Activities Expanding to Three Other Governorates

Karak, Jordan – 4 November 2026

Implementation of climate-smart Farmer Field Schools (FFS) officially commenced today, Wednesday, in the Southern Jordan Valley area of Karak Governorate, under the letter of agreement signed between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture last August. Activities are set to continue in the coming days in Madaba, Ma’an and Tafileh governorates, with the aim of strengthening farmers’ capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change through the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and the application of technologies that improve water-use efficiency in the agricultural sector.

Under the agreement, 44 Farmer Field Schools and 44 field days will be conducted across the four project target governorates of Karak, Madaba, Tafileh and Ma’an. The activities aim to equip 880 farmers, both women and men, with practical knowledge and skills in climate-smart agriculture, while introducing them to agricultural practices and technologies that help conserve water, improve productivity and strengthen the resilience of agricultural systems to climate-related challenges.

The Farmer Field Schools follow a learning-by-doing approach, providing farmers with hands-on training in the field. This enables them to test modern agricultural practices, assess their results, exchange knowledge and experiences, and explore practical solutions suited to local conditions and the challenges of water scarcity and climate change. These efforts are expected to contribute to more sustainable agricultural production and improved livelihoods in rural communities.

These activities are being implemented under the project “Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agriculture Sector” (BRCCJ), implemented by FAO in Jordan with funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), in collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture, Water and Irrigation, and Environment, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

With a total budget of USD 33.25 million and a seven-year implementation period, the project targets four governorates – Karak, Madaba, Tafileh and Ma’an – which are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and water stress, as well as the associated challenges facing the agricultural sector and rural communities.

BRCCJ is the first project in Jordan to receive funding from the Green Climate Fund. It aims to strengthen water security and enhance climate change resilience in the agricultural sector by improving water-use efficiency, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and building the capacity of local communities to better cope with the impacts of
